Gwen Dutcher was
born in Medillin, Colombia and raised in Madison, Wisconsin.
She began figurative sculpting and portrait drawing at the age
of 13. After studying art at Brigham Young University in
Utah, Dutcher moved to Los Angeles, California, where she
privately pursued fine art and began teaching drawing technique.
At that time, she was working in a non-art-related position for
the Walt Disney Company in nearby Burbank. It was at
Disney where Dutcher soon became aware of commercial sculpting
opportunities. In 1996, six months after tackling her
first sculpting assignment, Dutcher began her career as a
full-time commercial sculptor.
As a noted sculptor,
Ducther has created some of the most endearing sculpture
releases for the Walt Disney Classics Collection and the Walt
Disney Collectors Society. Noted sculptures include
the Aristocats scene, the
White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, the
Ballerina and Tin Soldier from Fantasia 2000,
Lady in the Hatbox from Lady and the Tramp,
Millennium Mickey, and
Tinker Bell from Peter Pan.
"As much as love
pre-Raphaelite and neoclassical art, I must admit an extreme
fondness for many of the classic Disney characters," states
Dutcher. "Creating sculptures for the Walt Disney Classics
Collection really allows me, as an artist, to delve deep into my
passion for creating imagery with a sense of emotion and
movement -- the Disney characters certainly allow me to explore
a full range of emotions and, of course, plenty of action and
exaggerated movement."
Dutcher now lives
with her husband and four boys in the mountains of Utah near
Salt Lake City.
