DAY 2

After a long night, it was up bright and early for the "Behind the Magic" seminars. No one was going to miss the sneak preview of the then upcoming animated feature Tarzan. The above picture shows the large ballroom with two video screens. Zoe Leader, Director of communications for Walt Disney Feature Animation, not only brought several clips of Tarzan, including behind the scenes shots of Minnie Driver ("Jane"), Rosie o'Donnell ("Terk"), and Phil Collins (Music Composer), but also clips from the then upcoming Fantasia 2000 and Toy Story 2 films. What a treat! It's no wonder why we were asked to put away all recording devices and cameras. The clips of all three films were fantastic; all were excited for their releases.

Following the wonderful feature animation seminar, we stepped out into a lobby of glass cases and easels showing the newest 1999 releases from the Walt Disney Art Classics.  In the photo above, you can appreciate the Electrical Light Parade Sculptures. Other cabinets contained a first look at the animator maquettes from Tarzan. Snow White and Prince WDCC sculptures, and the Sleeping Beauty hand-painted cel with a pink dress transforming to blue and another blue transforming to pink.

There wasn't much time to look; about 15 minutes to be exact. It was time to get a good seat for the next "Behind-the-Magic" seminar.  It was entitled "Good Morning Art Classics", hosted by Craig Hodgkins, the training manager for the Walt Disney Art Classics.

The guests included David Pacheco, the creative art director (pictured above at left), and Patrick Romandy-Simmons (middle), the WDAC sculptor who created the convention's "three hitchhiking ghosts" sculptures. The crowd was quite impressed to hear the many things that Patrick Simmons had done. Not only did he sculpt many WDCC and Enchanted Places sculptures, but he had also done many imagineering jobs as well, including many of the large sculptures found at the All-Star resorts and in the theme parks. His talent was only second to his kindness as he warmfully greeted all who came in contact with him throughout the convention.

Next, Craig Hodgkins was joined by the vice president of the WDAC, Audrey Finci...They hovered over a sculpture draped in a black cloth...
